A Missouri man has been detained in connection with a murder in Oklahoma nearly 30 years ago.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma stated on Tuesday that Timothy Hollan, 73, of Miller, Mo., was detained in Kansas City, Kan., on a federal arrest warrant on December 15.

According to officials, the warrant stemmed from a grand jury indictment that charged Hollan with one count of murder in Indian country and one count of causing the death of another person while violating Title 18.

The indictment charges that Hollan “willfully, deliberately, maliciously, and with premeditation and malice” killed a Native American individual on Cherokee Nation Reservation land in September 1999.

Officials reported that in November 2023, a body was discovered in an abandoned well in rural Adair County that was DNA-matched to the alleged victim from 1999.

If convicted of the charges, Hollan faces life in prison, the death penalty, and a fine of up to $250,000.

The Eastern District of Oklahoma did not provide information about the victim’s identify.
