A Miami Amazon driver is facing charges after allegedly stealing and selling packages that he was supposed to deliver, according to authorities.
Diego Alejandro Santana-Caner, 25, was detained on Monday and charged with trafficking in stolen items and grand theft, according to records.
Santana-Caner was arrested at an Amazon facility in Sweetwater after the manager spoke with him about 20 missing or never-delivered packages, according to the arrest report.
Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer spoke in court on Tuesday about the charges against him.
“He’s working as an Amazon driver in November, I guess for a few weeks, November to December 11th; he’s selling items that he’s supposed to deliver,” Glazer told me.
Santana-Caner was also accused of taking food from the Amazon lunchroom without paying, according to the report.
The lost parcels and food are worth more than $2,200, according to the complaint.
Glazer appointed Santana-Caner as a public defender and set his bond at $10,000.
According to an Amazon spokesman, the suspect is not an Amazon employee but rather works for a company that delivers products to customers.
“We’re grateful to the Sweetwater Police Department for their swift action and we’ll continue cooperating fully with their investigation,” the statement read. “The individual is no longer delivering packages to Amazon customers.”
