A Florida man killed his wife and then shot his stepdaughter before fatally shooting himself during an incident that stemmed from an argument over an NFL game, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd announced during a press conference.
On December 22, Jason Kenney, 47, fatally shot his wife, Crystal Kenney, after she suggested he turn off the Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts, according to Judd. Kenney was said to have been drinking, and the disagreement escalated, prompting Judd to instruct her 12-year-old son to call 911.
When the boy heard gunfire, he reportedly fled to a neighbor’s home. When responding deputies arrived at the scene, Kenney was dead, and her 13-year-old daughter had gunshot wounds to the shoulder and face.
The 13-year-old girl is said to be recovering at a hospital.
“She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,’” Judd said during the press conference.
The 12-year-old boy and the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, who deputies discovered asleep in her crib, were unharmed. Kenney reportedly fled the scene and called his sister, who lives in upstate New York, telling her he had “done something” wrong and that it would be the last time they spoke before driving to his father’s house, where responding deputies attempted to get him out of a shed before he fatally shot himself.
During a check of the family’s home, authorities discovered a message in which Crystal begged her husband to get treatment.
“You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” the note states, according to Judd.
Crystal’s children are said to be in the custody of their grandparents following the incident.
“The entire family was destroyed,” Judd said. “Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be.”
