A man surrendered after shooting a woman and her dog in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside area on Friday, and authorities returned fire, according to police.
Allegheny County police are conducting an investigation into the shooting involving Pittsburgh officers, as per policy.
Allegheny County police said officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of Centre Avenue at 4:12 p.m. after receiving reports of an ongoing assault with a weapon.
Police arrived to discover a man outside an apartment building threatening a woman and her dog with a gun. Officers requested the man to drop the pistol, but he continued to fire at the woman and her dog.
Officers returned fire as the suspect attempted to flee, and he surrendered shortly after, officials say.
Preliminary findings indicate that the woman’s dog was shot. According to police, the victim is being treated for critical injuries.
According to authorities, the victim received facial injuries during the incident. She was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Before authorities arrived, an employee at a nearby business reportedly challenged the suspect, who fired once at the employee, police say.
No other injuries were reported.
The individual who was arrested has yet to be named.
