A Twin Falls woman is facing felony charges after allegedly shooting her boyfriend in the leg over a Christmas cookie argument.
Kathryn Marie Welch, 53, has been charged with felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, felony destruction or concealing of evidence, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor use of drug paraphernalia, according to court documents.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on December 23, deputies from the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office got a call regarding a 61-year-old male who had been shot by his girlfriend, Welch, at a home on Hillcrest Road East. The caller, the man’s mom, informed deputies that he had been shot a few days earlier.
According to the criminal complaint, the shooting occurred on December 21.
When deputies arrived at the house, they discovered the man at the front door with blood smears and holes in his jeans’ right knee, according to court documents. Deputies questioned the man about the gun and whether they were allowed to enter the house. The man said, “No, what for?” and the cops responded by pointing to his knee.
The sheriff’s office deputies asked the man where he had been shot, but he did not respond. The deputy asked, “Right there in the knee, where your leg is bleeding?” The man said, “Yeah.”
The man refused medical attention.
Deputies later took Welch into arrest. According to court filings, the pair reported the shooting as an “accident.” Welch had also stated that the incident occurred in the bedroom during a dispute about Christmas cookies. Welch also stated to investigators that he had disposed of the rifle by “accident.”
Court filings do not say whether the .22 pistol used in the alleged shooting was located.
Prosecutors claim Welch intentionally destroyed or concealed the pistol, knowing it would be used as evidence in a felony investigation, resulting in an evidence-tampering allegation.
Welch’s preliminary hearing is slated for January 9.
