A baby died after being born on the street in downtown Columbia early Friday.
According to preliminary information from the Columbia Police Department, a woman described as “unsheltered” gave birth on Sumter Street. She and the infant were sent to a hospital, where the child was declared dead.
The Columbia Police Department’s special victims team and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are investigating the matter.
They immediately provided no other information.
