3 people detained following drug bust in Virginia

Three people were detained after a traffic stop in Fairfax County earlier this month, where police discovered firearms and illegal drugs inside a vehicle.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers from the Mount Vernon Police District Neighborhood Patrol Unit stopped an automobile near the intersection of Russell Road and Norwood Drive on January 6 due to a modified exhaust. During the stop, officers noted that one of the passengers appeared apprehensive.

Police claim that the passenger grabbed for his waistband and refused to get out of the car. Officers intervened and brought him into arrest, recovering a handgun in the process.

A further search of the vehicle revealed a second handgun, as well as suspected marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, according to police. The investigation led to the arrest of three men from Alexandria.

Police identified the suspects as 18-year-old Maico Barrios II, who is charged with attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, and various firearm and narcotics distribution crimes. The driver, Michael Owusu, 19, was charged with drug distribution and traffic infractions. Another passenger, 19-year-old Bashir Abdelmonim Bakhit, is accused of drug distribution, firearm possession with narcotics, and possession of a forged license.

A 17-year-old male was also present inside the vehicle at the time of the stop. Police said potential charges against the minor are still being considered. The case is still under investigation.
