Barbour County woman detained for hitting child with paddle she called ‘the attitude adjuster’

A Barbour County woman was detained for hitting a child with a wooden paddle she called “the attitude adjuster,” according to West Virginia State Police.

Courtney Crites, 32, of Belington, is charged with three counts of child abuse resulting in injury.

The Child Advocacy Center interviewed five minor children, one of whom said Crites kicked, hit, and shouted at him, according to court documents.

The child claims Crites kicked him “in the privates once” around two months ago and that if he does not “do his clothes away the right way,” Crites uses “the paddle called the attitude adjuster,” according to court documents. He also said that Crites pushed him outdoors in the freezing cold before allowing him back inside and beating him with the paddle, causing it to shatter.

According to police, when Crites was frustrated, she would go past the male youngster and kick him. Court filings reveal that the male child was terrified of living with Crites again.

Crites is currently in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, with a $100,000 bond.
