Driver Sentenced to 3 Years for Fatal DUI Crash

In Montgomery County Circuit Court, a Lanham, MD, woman was sentenced to ten years in prison, with all but three years suspended, after pleading guilty to negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle in connection with a deadly crash that killed a 30-year-old Rockville man.

Prosecutors said the June 2024 crash on Interstate 495 in Silver Spring involved alcohol impairment, with the defendant’s blood alcohol content detected at 0.18 percent.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Carlos Acosta sentenced defendant Maria Luisa Alvarez, 20, of Lanham, to ten years in prison, suspending all but three years of service and five years of supervised probation upon release.” The sentencing hearing was held on Friday, January 9, 2026.

On November 14, 2025, Alvarez pled guilty to negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle in the crash that killed 30-year-old Boris Josue Bonilla of Rockville.

On June 5, 2024, at approximately 3 a.m., the crash occurred on the inner loop of Interstate 495 near Georgia Avenue in Silver Springs. According to the inquiry, the defendant was driving a 2005 Honda Accord on the ramp from southbound Georgia Avenue to the inner loop of I-495. The defendant failed to handle the on-ramp’s right-hand curve, entering the grassy space between the ramp and the roadway before continuing perpendicularly into the inner loop’s travel lanes. The defendant’s Accord was hit on the driver’s side by a Honda Civic. A Jeep Wrangler then turned counterclockwise and struck the Accord on its passenger side. The Jeep flipped and rolled over twice. The defendant’s vehicle came to a stop in the far-left lane and the left shoulder. All three vehicles’ drivers, as well as two Civic passengers, were sent to the hospital with injuries. Bonilla was a front-seat passenger in the Accord. They pronounced him dead at the scene. A toxicological test revealed that the defendant had a blood alcohol concentration of. 18 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.

Assistant State’s Attorney Joshua Wesnidge prosecuted this case.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Boris Bonilla. This was a tragic and unnecessary loss, and we thank the Maryland State Police for their thorough investigation in this matter,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
