Mexican man sentenced to prison in Mississippi for drug trafficking

A Mississippi federal court sentenced a man to ten years in prison for drug trafficking.

According to court documents, Arturo Bonilla, 48, of Mexico, was arrested in Tishomingo County in 2021 following a traffic check. Authorities discovered him in possession of methamphetamine.

Agents with the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) began investigating Bonilla’s role in narcotics distribution and discovered he was responsible for trafficking at least six kilograms into Mississippi. HSI also determined Bonilla’s illegal presence in the United States.

Bonilla was sentenced to 120 months in jail, with five years of supervised release if he remained in the country. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials placed an immigration detainer on the defendant, which would result in his expulsion from the United States once his federal sentence expired.

HSI investigated this case, with assistance from the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
