Suspect Killed And Another Shot And Injured By Police In Newark

One man died and another was injured after a police shooting in Newark on Monday.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. at a corner liquor store near Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue.

According to officials, Newark police officers confronted many people at the scene, and one of them fired his firearm, striking two of them.

They were taken to University Hospital, where one of them, an unidentified man, was declared deceased. The other injured man is being treated and is likely to live.

According to residents, one man was sitting in a car when undercover detectives arrived and fired rounds.

Witnesses assert that they had to dodge gunfire, yet no one comprehends the circumstances that escalated the event into a shootout.

Gunfire did not hit any police officers. One cop was transported to the hospital for assessment and then released.

The specific circumstances of the shooting are now unknown.

Mayor Ras Baraka issued a statement, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy for everyone involved when a police officer feels the need to draw their weapon—and so much more so when they are compelled to fire.”

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., stated in a statement that “a fatal shooting involving a civilian and a member of law enforcement is especially difficult and complex due to the impact it has on our community” and expressed support for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office investigation.
