A Mississippi man is in custody after kidnapping a two-year-old child during a domestic incident in Slidell last week.
Slidell Police went to a reported domestic dispute at a residence in the Slidell area. Officers discovered that Oliver Gillum, 53, of Mississippi, was involved in a domestic incident with his significant other. The encounter resulted in many bite wounds to both an adult female and a newborn child.
Gillum fled the scene in his significant other’s vehicle, leaving a 2-year-old child belted inside. The two-year-old was unrelated to Gillum, according to investigators.
Multi-agency search leads to arrest
Slidell police determined that Gillum had traveled to Picayune, Mississippi. Gillum was apprehended without incident after the Picayune Police Department and the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office discovered him hiding near a Picayune residence.
He did not have the vehicle or the 2-year-old child with him when he was arrested. Picayune Police officers discovered the abandoned vehicle several blocks away and found the two-year-old child safe.
Gillum, who has a long history of violent crimes, has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, domestic violence battery with child endangerment, and cruelty to a juvenile.
All victims were taken to local hospitals for evaluations.
Officials were preparing to issue an Amber Alert, but the youngster was found before it was necessary.
The Slidell Police Department praised the Picayune Police Department, the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office, and the Louisiana State Police for their help.
