Former Teacher Sentenced To 1 Year In Prison For Felony Insurance Theft Scheme

Kanika Oni Boston, 51, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced after being convicted of felony theft scheme and criminal insurance fraud, according to Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown.

The case concerned illegal insurance payments collected from Aflac and National Teachers Association Life Insurance while Boston lived in Maryland, and it was investigated by the Office of the Attorney General’s Fraud and Corruption Unit and the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Investigators discovered that between 2016 and 2017, Boston submitted seven bogus claims to NTALife without sufficient medical proof, resulting in $106,100 in erroneous payments. From 2017 to 2021, she submitted almost 100 more fraudulent claims with AFLAC, using false medical data, and received more than $324,000. Authorities stated that none of the assertions were supported by medical documents.

On January 13, 2026, C. Philip Nichols Jr. of the Prince George’s County Circuit Court sentenced Boston to one year in jail, five years of unsupervised probation, and up to 19 years in prison if probation is broken. Officials stated that Boston previously pleaded guilty and paid full restitution to the affected insurers in the amount of $430,335.17.
