A woman who was discovered dead Tuesday night at an on-campus apartment complex at the University of South Carolina has been identified.
According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, the body of Eliana Peterson, 18, was discovered in the 600 block of Lincoln Street.
“We will continue to work with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to thoroughly examine this death. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the USC community,” Rutherford said in a statement.
In a statement, university spokesperson Jeff Stensland verified Peterson’s status as a freshman at USC.
“The university can confirm the death of one of our students, Eliana,”Ellie” Peterson, a first-year chemistry major from Sumter, South Carolina. Her death was reported yesterday (Tuesday) in the 650 Lincoln student housing complex. It is currently being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division. “No additional information is available at this time, but there is no threat to campus,” he stated.
Stensland also stated that Carolina’s student affairs team is providing assistance to those affected and other members of the campus community.
The University of South Carolina Police Department requested that SLED conduct an investigation.
A heavy police presence in the vicinity prompted a part of Lincoln Street to be closed during a USC men’s basketball game. The street is been reopened.
A SLED spokeswoman stated that the inquiry is “active and ongoing.”
No other information was immediately provided.
This is a developing story.
