A violent altercation that began by a dispute over tool usage turned into a machete attack last Friday in Winter Haven. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Moises Alberto Rodriguez, 34, has been detained and charged with various counts, including attempted second-degree murder.
Deputies responded to a complaint last Friday at 5:41 p.m. from a home on Flamingo Boulevard, where a 38-year-old male received a significant arm laceration after Rodriguez allegedly attacked him with a machete during an altercation. The man was getting equipment from a shed when the incident occurred, and witnesses sent him to a local hospital.
According to an official statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Rodriguez attempted to flee arrest but eventually surrendered after a brief foot pursuit. During his detention, officials seized methamphetamine and a glass pipe.
Rodriguez, who has a lengthy criminal record, including a previous attempted second-degree murder accusation, was taken into jail without incident but refused to identify the whereabouts of the machete. The sheriff’s office stated that the victim, suspect, and witnesses are all related, emphasizing the case’s domestic character.
Rodriguez was booked into the Sheriff’s Processing Center on charges of attempted second-degree murder, evidence tampering, methamphetamine possession, and drug paraphernalia. Authorities also mentioned his previous crimes and time in Florida State Prison.
