Ashland City man on the lam for year apprehended in Florida

An Ashland City man wanted on various offenses in both Cheatham and Dickson Counties discovered that he can run but not hide, especially with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Unit (CCSOWU) on the hunt.

The Tallahassee Police Department apprehended Cody Ellis Waller, 35, at a bus stop in Tallahassee, Florida, on Tuesday, January 13. According to CCSO commander Sgt. Ryan Hawkins, if Waller agrees, he might be extradited to Cheatham County this week.

Since its inception in May of last year, the CCSOWU has been generating headlines across the country by apprehending wanted individuals. Hawkins stated that the warrants list has led his team all the way to Arizona and Delaware.

Waller was wanted in Cheatham County on an aggravated child abuse complaint against a minor eight years old or less filed in 2020, but he did not appear in court in 2023. Waller had also faced other accusations in Dickson County in recent years, including theft, fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, and violation of a protective order.

The CCSOWU collaborates with other law enforcement organizations to bring people on the run to justice, but while they celebrate their wins, they don’t have much downtime because the list keeps expanding. “It’s daunting because there’s a whole bunch of them, so we celebrate for five or 10 minutes and then we reach in the desk and pull out another file and start on the next one,” Hawkins told me.
