Nearly a month after an electric scooter rider was killed in a hit-and-run in Miami, the driver who police believe is responsible has been taken into custody.
Javier Sanjaytzay, 27, was arrested Tuesday on allegations of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash and driving without a license, according to Miami-Dade jail records.
The collision occurred around 10 p.m. on December 30 at the intersection of Southwest 14th Avenue and Southwest 6th Street.
According to an arrest report, the victim was riding an electric scooter when they were hit by a blue Hyundai Tucson that had run a stop sign.
The Tucson escaped, but a portion of the front left quarter panel remained at the site, according to the report.
The scooter rider was sent to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in severe condition with a traumatic head injury and died on January 7.
On December 31, a police sergeant observed a Tucson traveling the wrong way down Southwest 7th Street, near Southwest 17th Avenue.
According to the investigation, the vehicle’s front end had damage consistent with a collision with a human.
The driver, Sanjaytzay, was questioned and admitted to being engaged in the incident, according to the newspaper.
On Tuesday, the automobile’s owner and Sanjaytzay met with traffic murder detectives. According to the report, the owner stated that he rented the car to Sanjaytzay, and Sanjaytzay stated that he was engaged in a crash but that the pedestrian got up and went away.
Sanjaytzay was arrested and brought into jail.
