A former youth football league director in Pennsylvania has been charged with embezzling nearly $250,000 from the organization over a five-year period, according to state Attorney General Dave Sunday.
William Spencer, 57, of Washington County, is charged with two counts of theft, receiving stolen property, and misapplication of entrusted property, according to online court documents.
His preliminary hearing is slated for March 11.
Spencer was director of the Washington/Greene Youth Football League, now known as the Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League, from 2013 until his resignation in March 2025, according to a statement released on Sunday.
According to its website, the league has 44 youth organization members spread over seven counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Spencer wrote 187 checks from the league’s accounts payable to himself totaling $230,000 from January 4, 2020, to February 18, 2025, according to Sunday.
According to Sunday, Spencer used the money to pay off credit cards, supplement a retirement account, and shop at restaurants, Amazon, and other retailers.
Spencer also withdrew $3,000 from the league and transferred it to accounts in his and his wife’s names.
“Our investigators in this untangled a five-year web of theft that impaired this youth sports league while lining the pockets of the defendant,” Sunday’s announcement stated.
“These are very serious charges regarding criminal conduct that betrayed financial contributors to the league’s prosperity,” the statement reads, “as well as the many coaches and young athletes involved in the league.”
