Police in Oak Lawn announced the arrest of a 19-year-old male in connection with the department’s investigation into criminals targeting video gaming terminals (VGTs) across the area.
According to authorities, the recent spate of matched burglaries has been an issue in Oak Lawn and the neighboring neighborhoods. Neighboring police departments said they worked together to apprehend those responsible.
On Thursday, February 5, police responded to a burglary report at Hashtag 95 Restaurant, 6260 West 95th Street. Officers discovered that around 5:20 a.m., four persons broke into the establishment and targeted video gaming terminals (VGT).
Police said the group stole an undetermined quantity of cash and destroyed many VGT machines.
About a month ago, on Thursday, January 8, officers discovered a burglary in progress inside La Cocina De Mama Restaurant. Officers responded around 5:30 a.m. and spotted approximately 8-10 persons flee the scene in the 5700 block of W 95th Street. Despite cops commencing a pursuit, the group managed to escape.
Oak Lawn officers apprehended alleged suspect Juelz Johnson in Chicago on Friday, February 27. Cook County prosecutors have already charged Johnson with two counts of felony burglary. Johnson is also facing accusations for similar burglaries in Worth.
The arrest came only hours after authorities in south suburban Midlothian announced that two suspects are facing identical accusations in connection with the burglary of a gaming café overnight on Wednesday, March 4. Police said Christian Streeter, 19, of Lynwood, and Amarion Mayo, 20, of Hammond, are both charged with burglary and criminal property damage.
According to police, cops responding to a burglary in progress saw a group of masked people fleeing the café and entering two stolen vehicles, with a third parked nearby.
Streeter and Mayo were captured after a pursuit, crash, and subsequent search. Authorities did not specify whether Johnson is involved.
Oak Lawn police said their investigation is ongoing.
