Summerfield man taken into custody after alleged incident involving granddaughter over holidays

A Summerfield man was taken into custody for violence after reportedly shoving past his granddaughter to speak with her husband.

The granddaughter of 71-year-old Robert Franklin Toms spoke with a deputy about an alleged offense on February 17, according to an arrest record from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. On December 23, 2025, she claimed that Toms battered her at a house on Northeast 40th Place in Silver Springs.

That day, she arrived at the house and found Toms in the front yard. She tried to stop him from stepping inside, but he insisted on talking to her husband. She showed the deputy footage of him pushing past her while she held his arm to keep him out of the house, according to the report.

The video does not show Toms pushing his granddaughter in the entryway, but he did push her away after he reached the front door. Her husband, who did not witness the push, encountered Toms at his home and had a brief quarrel with him. He later deescalated the situation into a talk and made additional plans for the approaching Christmas, according to the story.

Both the granddaughter and her husband stated that Toms owned a portion of the house. However, he rarely left the house without authorization. The relationship had deteriorated following an incident with their child in October 2025. She reported the event to law enforcement many times but received no assistance, according to the report.

So, on Tuesday, a deputy spoke with Toms by phone. He said he didn’t pressure his granddaughter. He merely pushed past her to enter the home. He knew she didn’t want him inside, but he wanted to talk to her husband, according to the story.

Toms was eventually arrested Tuesday afternoon on a charge of simple assault. He was hauled into Marion County Jail and released after posting a $500 bond.
