Drunk driver apprehended after hitting security guard and IMPD officer in downtown Indianapolis

A security guard and an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer were both hit by the same drunk driver around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, prompting the arrest of a 28-year-old man.

According to a statement from IMPD Chief Tanya Terry on X, Derrick Bryant was detained after “recklessly fleeing” after hitting a security guard in downtown Indianapolis. Shortly later, authorities claim he struck an IMPD officer.

In her post, Terry said she was angry and deeply disturbed by the incident. “This morning I saw a video circulating on social media that left me angry and deeply disturbed,” she said. “What is the most disappointing is that many people continued recording on their phones and going about their night after watching those working to keep the area safe get injured. I am thankful for the few individuals who stepped forward to help.”

Terry stated that this type of conduct is alarming and unacceptable.

“Think about that for a moment,” she said in her post. “Two people doing their jobs to protect others were struck by a vehicle, and a few chose to run to their aid, while some others can be heard in the crowd seemingly cheering.”

Terry stated that the cop sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover, but he warns everyone that this might have ended tragically. “Let’s be clear. Our city will not tolerate such irresponsible and violent behavior. No one who wears a badge or stands guard to protect his neighborhood should ever be viewed as a target or spectacle.”

Terry stated that this incident was unrelated to a street takeover and did not involve several automobiles. “This was a driver who chose to drive while intoxicated and endangered the community.”

Bryant has been accused with driving while intoxicated, fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in harm, and resisting arrest.
