Lakeland substitute teacher detained for inappropriate conduct with students

A substitute teacher in Polk County has been detained after reports of inappropriate conduct with students at two middle schools, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Emmanuel Sanchez, a 32-year-old Lakeland resident, worked as a temporary substitute for Kelly Services. On February 25, 2026, a 13-year-old Kathleen Middle School student stated that Sanchez, who identified as “Mr. Jeremiah,” sat next to her, touched her thigh, and made inappropriate remarks about her attractiveness. According to the sheriff’s office, detectives interviewed seven additional kids who verified the victim’s allegation.

On March 3, 2026, two 12-year-old male pupils at Lake Gibson Middle School reported Sanchez’s inappropriate touching and statements, prompting additional complaints. Witnesses reportedly noticed Sanchez being excessively excited near students.

On March 6, detectives approached Sanchez at his Lakeland apartment. He verified the event with the middle school girl but denied touching her and rejected the charges against the boys. Sanchez was arrested and charged with Lewd and Lascivious Conduct on a Minor, a second-degree crime. The investigation is still underway, and the sheriff’s office encourages anyone with more information to come forward.

“This is highly inappropriate and disgusting behavior by a substitute teacher,” Sheriff Grady Judd stated. “We want to make sure he is held accountable and that he does not have this kind of access to other children.”

Polk County Public Classrooms announced that Sanchez would no longer work as a substitute or in any other role in their classrooms. Superintendent Fred Heid commented, “We expect substitute teachers and all others who work with students to protect them and act appropriately.” We will always work with law enforcement to guarantee the safety and well-being of our pupils.
