Chicago man apprehended minutes after South Side stabbing

A Chicago man faces numerous criminal charges after allegedly stabbing another man on the city’s South Side Sunday night and being apprehended minutes later.

Nigel Burwell, 45, faces one felony crime of attempted first-degree murder, one felony count of aggravated battery resulting in serious bodily damage, and one felony count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

According to police, the stabbing occurred around 10:16 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Avalon Park area.

A 40-year-old man was stabbed and critically injured, according to authorities.

Officers apprehended Burwell minutes later, only a block away.

It’s unknown what prompted the stabbing or whether the two men knew each other.

Burwell is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
