Reckless teen driver apprehended during traffic stop near recreation center in The Villages

A reckless teen driver was apprehended with pills and THC vape pens during a traffic stop near a recreation center in the Villages.

An anonymous caller reported seeing a silver Toyota Corolla driving dangerously near the Colony Cottage Recreation Center around 10 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest record from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The driver, Auburndale resident Nevayez Khaleel Desmornes Whitman, 19, swerved across the road and nearly collided with two other vehicles.

The vehicle also had a flat tire on the front driver’s side, and it collided with many traffic cones. Another caller saw Desmornes Whitman pull over, get out, stagger, and return to the vehicle. A deputy then drove out to the area and saw him seated in the driver’s seat with the engine still running, according to the report.

While conversing with Desmornes Whitman, the deputy smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. He responded in a low tone, making it difficult to understand, and his eyes were only partially open. He eventually admitted that the last time he smoked marijuana was at 10 p.m. the night before, along with another narcotic that he declined to expand on, according to the report.

He went on to add that his car was “confusing,” and he was attempting to start it since it was malfunctioning. He was unaware that his front tire was flat until another individual informed him, according to the complaint.

The officer continued to search the vehicle with the assistance of a backup unit. They discovered two Xanax pills on the center console, followed by a vape pen with THC oil in a black handbag on the passenger seat. An additional search of Demornes Whitman’s person turned up another vape pen containing more THC oil, according to the report.

He then volunteered to engage in field sobriety tests, during which he used his hands for balance and did not follow directions. This prompted the officer to believe he was under the influence. He later provided a urine sample, according to the report.

Desmornes Whitman was arrested on allegations of possessing xanax without a prescription, possessing THC oil, and driving while intoxicated. He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after paying a $4,500 bond.
