Chicago man apprehended more than year after fatal South Side hit-and-run

A Chicago man has been apprehended more than a year after police say he fled the scene of a crash that killed a 77-year-old man on the city’s South Side.

Rayshad Harris, 29, was arrested on Wednesday about 2 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Oglesby Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Harris was recognized as the driver of a fatal traffic accident that occurred on December 26, 2024, at approximately 12:03 p.m. in the 1500 block of East 79th Street in Avalon Park.

According to authorities, a 77-year-old man was struck in the incident and died as a result of his injuries.

Harris is charged with one felony offense of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in damage or death, one felony count of failing to report a fatal accident, and one criminal crime of possessing a controlled substance.

Harris is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Thursday.
