According to Columbus police, a man and woman were dead and three other injured Saturday afternoon after an attempted traffic stop in South Linden culminated in a crash.
Sgt. James Fuqua told 10TV that cops tried a traffic stop around 3:40 p.m. at Cleveland and East Maynard avenues. He stated that police were aware of the vehicle’s involvement in a “previous felony incident” prior to the stop.
According to a police bulletin issued Sunday morning, the car was engaged in a shooting on March 10.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 17-year-old driver of a 2011 Toyota Prius accelerated westbound on East 19th Avenue after failing to yield at a stop sign. The Toyota then collided with a 2007 Saturn Ion at the junction of East 19th and Hamilton Avenue.
Fuqua stated that officers had disengaged and were not in pursuit when the incident occurred.
The Saturn’s passenger, Tessa Berry, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the OSHP. The driver of the Saturn, 71-year-old Franklin Ward, was brought to Grant Medical Center and pronounced dead.
According to Fuqua, the Toyota carried many individuals who were later transported to a hospital in unclear situations.
Police said one of the occupants was a 17-year-old teenager who is being held at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center on shooting-related warrants. Another tenant, Tyler Brandon, 20, was charged with possessing guns while on disability.
A 17-year-old suspect was identified as the vehicle’s driver and is currently in police custody.
The crash is still under investigation.
