Ex-Cook County Corrections officer sentenced to prison in deadly shooting outside Niles restaurant

A now-former Cook County Corrections employee was sentenced Wednesday after being found guilty in a deadly 2023 shooting outside of a Niles restaurant, according to court documents.

The shooting occurred in April 2023 in the parking lot of Miraj, located at 8801 Milwaukee Ave. in Niles.

Nearly three years after the fatal shooting, Alan Kettina of Northbrook was found guilty of six counts of murder.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Kettina was working for the Cook County Department of Corrections at the time of the incident, authorities said.

Mark Asber, 22, from Niles, was shot outside the nightclub. He passed away at a local hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to investigators, the victim and suspect knew each other before to the incident.

Prosecutors claimed Kettina shot Asber in the back as he walked away.

Kettina’s lawyers said the victim bullied him and threatened to harm him and his family if he didn’t sneak contraband into the Cook County Jail.
