Two men are under arrest after allegedly impersonating FBI agents and defrauding a 78-year-old woman of nearly $200,000 in gold, according to authorities.
According to the Westlake Police Department, the fraud began in August 2025 when the victim dialed a false “Apple Security” phone number that appeared in a pop-up on her computer, stating she had been hacked.
According to investigators, the individual on the phone purported to be an FBI agent and convinced the woman that she was necessary to participate in a federal investigation. She was reportedly told not to tell anyone.
Authorities stated the victim was told to withdraw huge quantities of money and buy gold coins and bars. The suspects then went to her house and took the gold, telling her it will be returned after the alleged investigation.
A business later informed the woman about the scam, prompting her to submit a report on March 26, according to the police.
Officers then collaborated with the victim to arrange for another pickup of phony gold. When the suspects returned to retrieve it, police had set up surveillance with vehicles, drones, and detectives.
The suspects were apprehended at the site.
According to authorities, both individuals face felony charges of theft by deceit and cooperating to commit fraud.
The investigation is underway.
