West Pullman Homicide Man Killed; 86 Shell Casings Recovered

Late Monday morning on Chicago’s Far South Side, a 26-year-old man was gunned down in West Pullman in what police say involved an extraordinary amount of gunfire. He was standing in the roadway in the 800 block of West 122nd Street when he was struck several times and pronounced dead just after noon.

The victim was later identified as Jajauan Thigpen, 26, from the Garfield Park neighborhood. He was shot around 11:55 a.m. and pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m., according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Responding cops discovered an unusually large number of shot casings scattered across the road, with around 86 retrieved at the scene as Area 2 detectives began their investigation.

The killing is the most recent in a succession of violent incidents on the Far South Side. A tragic ambush in a parked car in West Pullman in January received similar attention, and local TV stations covered community forums and outreach activities aimed at reducing the violence. According to ABC7, neighborhood leaders and anti-violence groups are clamoring for greater resources as locals continue to demand safer streets.

Area 2 detectives stayed on the site Monday and are still investigating the situation. As the investigation continues, authorities have not made any arrests or provided suspect descriptions. At this early stage, the Chicago Sun-Times story is the major public record of what is known.
