A man with a gunshot wound was detained after reporting a drive-by shooting in Central Florida.
Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a suspected drive-by gunshot at a residence on 2nd Avenue NW in Mulberry.
According to local law officials, 22-year-old James Ansony Sosa-Pinto of Mulberry reported the incident to several staff members after arriving at a Lakeland Regional Health Emergency Room with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
Deputies proceeded to Sosa-Pinto’s residence and discovered blood in his bedroom. They also discovered a spent casing and bullet in the room, as well as an impact mark on the floor. Multiple vape cartridges containing THC resin were also found in the bedroom.
According to law enforcement, the gunshot wound on Sosa-Pinto’s leg indicated that a bullet had entered the thigh and exited through the calf. Powder burns were visible near the entrance wound and on Sosa-Pinto’s left hand.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office concluded that Sosa-Pinto accidentally shot himself. When confronted with the contradictions in his claim of a drive-by shooting, Sosa-Pinto backtracked and stated that he had never claimed being the victim of a drive-by.
After being treated for his injuries, James Ansony Sosa-Pinto was arrested and brought to the Sheriff’s Processing Center, where he was charged with False Report of a Violent Firearm, Possession of Cannabis Resin, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
