A former Cooper County Jail employee convicted of the death of an inmate has been sentenced to jail.
Former Lieutenant Robyn Pfeiffer was convicted in February of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in the death of Brooke Bailey, 33, of Jefferson City. She wanted a new trial, but it was denied on Friday. She was then sentenced to three years in jail, with credit for time served.
Bailey died in October 2023 while being incarcerated at the Cooper County Jail. According to court records, some jail personnel were informed that Bailey was bipolar, diabetic, and had anxiety disorders, while others believed she was detoxing from fentanyl.
Court records state Bailey was found on the floor of her jail cell the night before her death. The next day, she was discovered dead on the floor.
Some of Pfeiffer’s coworkers had asked for medical help for Bailey, but Pfeiffer allegedly told them she was just “playing games”.
The medical examiner determined that Bailey died as a result of diabetic complications.
Pfeiffer’s co-defendant, former Deputy Rachel Atherton, is also charged with first-degree manslaughter. She is currently slated for a bench trial on April 21.
