A man was charged with driving under the influence following two crashes involving a stolen car in Chicago’s western suburbs.
The crashes occurred soon before 9 p.m. Monday on Route 83 in Elmhurst. The first incident occurred near St. Charles Road, while the second occurred near North Avenue.
Following the second crash, a witness told police that the driver exited the 2015 Ford 500 and went east through a neighboring parking lot.
Elmhurst police officers located the driver behind a store in the 500 block of North Avenue. Police say the suspect, 28-year-old Edwin O. Aponte, was holding a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey and wearing a backpack containing stolen devices.
Aponte was arrested and given a breathalyzer test, which allegedly revealed his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be.164.
Further inquiry revealed that the Ford car had been stolen from Bensenville, and two of the items in Aponte’s rucksack had store security sensors attached to them.
Aponte was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while intoxicated, theft, obstructing a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license.
Aponte, who is also facing many traffic violations, was escorted to the DuPage County Judicial Center for his first court appearance.
