Student Apprehended for Bringing Gun to School in Orlando

A student was apprehended for bringing a gun to school in Orlando today.

According to the Orlando Police Department, school resource officers at Dr. Phillips High School were told that a student on campus was carrying a weapon of his. Dr. Phillips High School is part of Orange County Public Schools.

OPD officers promptly identified and discovered Joshua Brown, a 17-year-old student, in his classroom. When he attempted to flee, SROs intervened and safely apprehended him.

Brown’s rucksack, which he was carrying at the time, had a loaded 9mm handgun.

Brown was detained and charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, possession of a firearm by a child, and resisting arrest without violence, according to local authorities.

“This is exactly how it’s supposed to work,” OPD Chief Eric Smith explained. “Our officers acted quickly on a tip from the community.”

The Orlando Police Department said this is still an active investigation.
