A South Bend man was sentenced to decades in prison Friday after being convicted of killing a man and hiding his body in the bedroom of his east Indianapolis house in September 2024.
James Grossnickle was sentenced to 62 years in prison on April 10 after being convicted of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a major violent criminal.
On March 18, a jury found Grossnickle guilty of shooting and killing Craig Jacobs, 40, in September 2024, and hiding Jacobs’ body in his bedroom.”Last month, the jury discovered the truth the defendant attempted to conceal, and today the court reinforced that truth with a sentence that reflects the gravity of his crimes,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears explained. “I am proud of our trial team for ensuring this defendant will spend the rest of his life in prison for the lives he impacted.”
Around 1 p.m. on September 4, 2024, IMPD officers were dispatched to a home on South Gray Street, near East Washington and South Rural streets. According to court records, friends discovered Jacobs shot to death in a bedroom. According to court filings, Jacobs died after suffering “multiple” gunshot wounds to the face.
Investigators subsequently gathered from witnesses at the scene that Jacobs had been missing for “several” days, and there were worries for his safety after Grossnickle was observed making “several” remarks about shooting him. That reportedly prompted the buddies to break down Jacob’s bedroom door, where they discovered his death and summoned authorities.
Grossnickle admitted to authorities that days before his arrest, he shot Jacobs “multiple times” in the head before the revolver jammed. Grossnickle then told police he had locked the door and secured it with a screw.
According to court documents, the murder weapon was located inside Grossnickle’s vehicle upon his detention. The defendant tried to conceal his crimes and appear as if nothing had changed, but he couldn’t avoid the truth,” Mears stated at the time of his conviction.
