A Virginia man was taken into custody for an alleged trying to scam in Monongalia County, court records said.
Jerry Wayne Buracker, 65, of Stanley, Va., was charged with breaking and entering, according to a criminal complaint filed in Monongalia County Magistrate Court.
According to the complaint, Buracker entered West Virginia University’s Stewart Hall on Tuesday by impersonating a building inspector or contractor. According to the lawsuit, Buracker posed as a contractor there to evaluate molding and tile.
According to the lawsuit, Buracker allegedly asked the victim to sign a piece of paper indicating that he was present and completed the inspection before departing the building. The victim reported that the next day, their bank sent them a fraud warning claiming that someone was attempting to cash checks.
According to the complaint, the victim stated that three checks from two separate banks were removed from checkbooks in their backpack. The name and driver’s license on the checks were tracked back to Buracker, according to authorities, who confirmed his identification by comparing witness testimony and his driver’s license photo to footage from the security cameras at Stewart Hall.
According to Kanawha County jail records, Buracker has also been charged with forging or uttering other writing. He is currently being jailed at South Central Regional Jail under a $5,000 bond.
