A 19-year-old Fort Lauderdale woman has been detained in connection with a robbery that police say got violent at a JD Sports store in Miami earlier this year.

According to an arrest complaint, Kennedy Johnson was identified as one of three defendants suspected of taking Nike gear and assaulting a store employee during a March 14 robbery at JD Sports, 3801 NW Seventh Street.

According to investigators, Johnson and two accomplices—Sherdenn Hanna Grant, 20, and Tramyah Cache Smith, 28—entered the store, grabbed several Nike sweatshirts and slacks, and attempted to leave without paying.

When the merchandise manager and another employee attempted to lock the doors, Miami police reported that Johnson and Grant kicked the manager multiple times before fleeing.

The allegation states that the suspects fled in a black BMW SUV, which surveillance cameras later recorded as it exited Centro City Plaza.

Detectives from the Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit said they used facial recognition technology and security video to identify all three suspects.

They said that the store manager and a witness later chose Johnson, Grant, and Smith from photo lineups.

According to the affidavit, Fort Lauderdale police detained two of the defendants in the same BMW and discovered fresh Nike attire that matched the stolen merchandise.

According to jail records, Johnson faces one count of strongarm robbery.

Johnson has an out-of-county arrest warrant and was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Wednesday afternoon.
