A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2004 murder of a 15-year-old girl in Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced that Sergio Reyes was sentenced on Friday for the murder of Elena Lasswell.

In July 2004, witnesses reported seeing Lasswell enter her bedroom with a boy and close the door. Laswell’s brother and friends discovered her body in her bedroom the following night.

Lasswell died of strangling and blunt force trauma.

In 2013, family DNA was used to link Reyes to the murder, and he was extradited from Mexico to Maricopa County exactly 20 years after she was discovered.

Reyes, who was 17 at the time, pled guilty to second-degree murder.
