JACKSON, Ohio – University of Rio Grande head cross country/track & field coach Bob Willey has announced the signing of Oak Hill High School’s Heidi Hemming for the 2014-15 school year.

Hemming, a 5-foot-7 heptathlete, experienced a successful prep career for head coach Mike Harden’s Oaks, as she was a member of the Southern Ohio Conference first team in the 4 x 100 and second team in the conference’s 4 x 400.

“It’s exciting to be signing with the University of Rio Grande and furthering my running career,” Hemming said after signing. “Running at the collegiate level has been a goal for me since my freshman year of high school.”

The excitement shows for Willey, too.

“We’re very happy to add Heidi to our Rio Grande family,” he said. “She’s enjoyed a good deal of success throughout her high school career and we hope that’s something that will continue on the collegiate level.”

Hemming, who plans to major in marketing upon enrollment, credits the convenience of the school to signing with the RedStorm.

“The closeness of the university was a major factory,” Hemming said. “It’s very convenient to be able to live at home and attend school at the same time.”

Hemming mentioned the various skills she provides when asked what she could bring to the team.

“I bring a diverse set of skills to the table,” said Hemming. “With that being said, I need to improve on my throwing skills. I’m hoping to become a more well-rounded athlete.”

Hemming is the daughter of Mark and Robin Hemming of Jackson.
