Over 50 apprehended by police holiday crime task force in Silver Spring

The Montgomery County Police Department’s Holiday Crime Suppression Task Force arrested over 50 people in Silver Spring between December and January, according to MCPD.

The team of six officers focused on retail theft, robberies, and organized stealing in order to deter crime and apprehend perpetrators.

In initiative with retail retailers and businesses, the program extended from Ellsworth Place to Cherry Hill Road’s Orchard Center shopping area.

Officers arrested 44 people for theft, two for auto theft, and eight for drug-related charges. The team also conducted more than 268 traffic stops, recovering two illegal pistols.

According to police, a guy with a loaded weapon was stopped for fare evasion at the Silver Spring Metro station in December and apprehended by task force officers.

There were no reported robberies in the region throughout the enforcement period, which the police department attributes to the task force.

According to the MCPD, this is “the first of many targeted enforcement initiatives” planned for the Silver Spring district this year.

The holiday task force project terminated on January 10.
