18-year-old suspect arrested after woman killed in shooting outside Little Havana store

An 18-year-old is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of a woman outside a convenience store in Little Havana, according to arrest reports.

Desiree Gonzalez died after being shot in December inside Habibi Mini Market on Southwest Third Street, according to Miami Police.

Gonzalez can be seen entering the store wearing a red jacket and a black cap on surveillance video. Moments later, a fight breaks out between people riding their bikes and two people outside the business.

The footage then shows Gonzalez coming outdoors as bullets are fired between the two groups.” “After the shooting, the subjects fled westbound on their motorized bikes down Southwest 3rd Street toward Southwest 19th Avenue,” police added. “The two intended targets also fled the scene northbound on a bicycle on Southwest 18th Avenue from Southwest 3rd Street.”

Gonzalez was brought to the hospital but did not survive.

In a heavily redacted arrest report, investigators stated that security footage from the Habibi Mini Market showed the shooting subjects visiting it many times. Police identified one of the suspects and interviewed him, but the discussion was censored.

According to the arrest report, cellphone data indicates that Jeferzon Noel Mendoza Herrera, 18, was present at the crime site. The cellular device’s historical data was further verified using security footage, comments provided by co-defendants, and device information,” according to the arrest report.

Mendoza Herrera was charged with first-degree murder. The names of his co-defendants were not immediately known.

Mendoza Herrera is also charged with attempted murder in a different incident on January 22 at Northwest 2nd Avenue and 75th Street in Miami.
