A Montgomery County judge sentenced Sophia Negroponte, 33, of Washington, D.C., to 35 years in prison for the killing of Yousuf Rasmussen in 2020.
Judge Terrence McGann imposed the sentence in Montgomery County Circuit Court after a jury convicted Negroponte of second-degree murder in a retrial in November 2025. The Maryland Court of Appeals overturned her previous 2023 conviction for the same charge.
According to Montgomery County Department of Police detectives, police responded to a stabbing report on February 13, 2020, at a residence in the 400 block of West Montgomery Avenue in Rockville. Rasmussen, 24, was found inside the home with a cutting wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said Rasmussen and Negroponte were acquaintances who had a disagreement inside the house prior to the stabbing.
