A 26-year-old man was sentenced to over 20 years in prison for killing a man who was attempting to protect a mother during an assault in Washington, DC.
On March 6, the attorney’s office stated that Stephen Herring had been sentenced to 21 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder while armed in November.
On the morning of August 22, 2023, D.C. police responded to a stabbing on M Street NE. Marcus Thurman was found unconscious with a stab wound in his chest.
He was transferred to the hospital and died more than a week later, on September 4.
Prior to the attack, Herring was arguing with a woman outside. As the situation worsened, Thurman stepped in to protect the mother and her young son, who was in a stroller nearby. Herring became agitated and departed the area. Shortly after, he reappeared with a knife.
A surveillance camera captured the attack, which showed Herring stabbing Thurman in the heart.
The judge also sentenced Herring to serve five years of supervised release after completing his sentence.
