On Saturday, March 14, just after 11 p.m., Mahwah Police Officer Michael Gioiosa noticed a car “traveling in excess of 100 MPH on Route 17 North,” according to Mahwah Police Capt. Michael Blondin.
As the officer caught up, the vehicle began swerving in and out of traffic, according to authorities. When Gioiosa activated his lights and sirens, the driver turned them off and tried to depart on Crossroads Boulevard “at a high rate of speed. “Authorities reported the vehicle crashed at the end of the off-ramp.
The driver, Matthew Yates, 19, of Highland Mills, NY, was arrested without incident and taken to headquarters, according to police.
Authorities charged Yates with second-degree evading and issued seven motor vehicle summonses. He was eventually transferred to the Bergen County Jail, where he was held until a Superior Court hearing, according to police.
