Chicago man charged in death of vanished 88-year-old woman on South Side

A man has been charged in the death of an 88-year-old woman who was reported missing on Chicago’s South Side.

Kevan Works, 66, has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing of a death, according to a Chicago police statement.

He was arrested on Tuesday morning in the 10700 block of South Lafayette in the Roseland neighborhood, where the body was discovered, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Officers said the victim, 88-year-old Daniest Graves, was found dead on April 7. According to investigators, Graves’ death was a homicide. Officials claim she was assaulted and had multiple injuries. Police said her body was found inside the house, wrapped in a rug.

Works was arrested at the spot and later charged.

Graves was reported missing after being last seen on March 27.

At the time, police reported she had heart illness, high blood pressure, and circulation problems.

Authorities also said that she drove a gray 2021 Ford EcoSport.

Works is due to appear for a detention hearing on Friday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

Graves was characterized as a nice woman by Roseland residents. Despite her health challenges, neighbors claim she was intelligent and capable of driving.

They were astonished to learn that a man living at 108th and LaFayette had been charged with murder.

Venethia Reese lives across the street. She added, “You don’t do that to anybody. That is not nice; you do not hurt people without a reason.”

Graves was the subject of a report by the Black and Missing Foundation, a group that disseminated the information to raise awareness to her absence.

Neighbors witnessed police activity at her residence and were heartbroken to learn of the woman’s death.

Yvonne Bellinger was in the neighborhood to visit her daughter. She answered, “I am sad to hear that at any time. I don’t know her, but it’s sad to hear such a loss; whether you know the person or not, it’s just unwelcome news.

Police have not revealed any additional information regarding what led up to the assault. Police did not specify the suspect’s relationship with the victim.
