15-Year-Old Killed, Two Wounded in New York Park Shooting; Two in Custody

Two people were taken into custody Wednesday after a shooting at Eisenhower Park on Long Island, New York, left a 15-year-old dead and two others injured. Police described the incident as gang-related.

The shooting happened around 8:20 p.m. near Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Avenue, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told reporters that gang members came across a social media invitation for a barbecue at the park, CBS New York reported.

Ryder said two individuals then got into an argument, and gunfire erupted.

Three people, including the 15-year-old boy, were hit by the gunfire. Authorities transported all three victims to a nearby hospital, where the teenager was later pronounced dead.

The two other victims were listed in stable condition, and Ryder said they underwent surgery late Wednesday. Authorities did not immediately release their ages.

Police took two individuals—both armed—into custody. Officials have not released the suspects’ identities or specified the charges they could face.

The shooting remains under investigation.

Following the incident, responding officers swarmed the area. Patrol cars lined the roadways, and a police helicopter circled overhead as officers worked the scene.
