1 killed, another critically hurt in wrong-way crash on I-270

One person died and another suffered critical injuries in a wrong-way crash early Thursday on Interstate 270, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said the crash happened around 12:47 a.m. on I-270 South, just north of Demsey Road in Blendon Township. A black Audi A3 was traveling southbound when it collided head-on with a red Chevrolet Cruze that appeared to be heading north in the southbound lanes.

Emergency crews transported both drivers, who were the only occupants in their vehicles, to a local Columbus hospital in critical condition. Authorities pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet dead at 1:32 a.m., while the Audi driver remains in critical condition.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved, and the crash remains under investigation.

Officials closed all lanes of the freeway for several hours as crews cleared the wreckage, but they have since reopened the roadway.
