Two individuals who admitted their roles in a candlelight vigil shooting nearly two years ago have now been sentenced, with one receiving a prison term of nearly 30 years.
Court records show that Tyrez Turner and Ladavia Fortner each entered guilty pleas related to the murders of Jakwaun Kimbro and Lonnie Johnston, both of whom were killed on June 3, 2024. The victims had attended a vigil for Da’Mya Cummerlander, who had been shot and killed the night before in the 2600 block of Woodsedge Road.
The vigil took place at Krumm Park on Alton Avenue, and just before 10 p.m., gunfire erupted into a crowd of დაახლოებით 50 people.
In the aftermath, Columbus police released surveillance footage from the scene and identified two persons of interest. Authorities arrested Turner and Fortner 10 days later, and both initially faced murder charges.
Fortner, 32, pleaded guilty to reduced charges of involuntary manslaughter and received a prison sentence of four to six years.
Turner, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts each of aggravated murder, murder, and possession of a dangerous ordinance, along with three counts of having weapons under disability and one count each of tampering with evidence and obstruction. Authorities also incorporated those pleas into additional guilty pleas for theft and another weapons charge tied to two prior incidents in May and April 2024.
The court ordered all of those charges to run concurrently, resulting in a 20-year prison sentence, except for two weapons charges that carried six- and three-year terms. Altogether, the sentences add up to a total of 29 years in prison.
In the separate killing of Cummerlander, authorities arrested Kenneth Hairston, who later pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 12.5 to 16.5 years in prison.
