Ohio Turnpike Aims to Collect More Than $5M in Unpaid Tolls from ‘Rogue’ Trucking Companies

BEREA, Ohio — More than 300 trucking companies across 26 states still owe unpaid tolls to the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and the Commission is now seeking to recover those funds, according to an April 20 statement.

“The Ohio Turnpike is one of the nation’s major freight corridors, and the vast majority of commercial trucking companies follow the rules and pay their tolls,” said Ferzan M. Ahmed, P.E., executive director of the Commission. “But a growing number of companies are breaking the law by avoiding toll payments.”

The Commission released a list of 315 trucking companies that each owe $5,000 or more in unpaid tolls on the Ohio Turnpike. All of these unpaid tolls, incurred since April 2024, range from $5,018.25 to $155,826.50 — totaling $5,198,451.90.

“Our goal is to provide the safest and best conditions at the lowest toll rate possible on the Ohio Turnpike,” Ahmed said. “These companies are making that goal harder to achieve. They have had every opportunity to pay their tolls but have ignored three mailed invoices and have been sent to collections.”

According to the Commission, any tolls that remain unpaid for 90 days from the date of the first invoice are sent to collections, and/or vehicle registrations are held until payment is made.

“Companies are either simply choosing not to pay, or using deliberate toll evasion tactics, or both,” Ahmed said.

The Commission uses a range of methods to collect unpaid tolls, including:

Capturing license plate images;
Mailing invoices;
Sending unpaid tolls to collections;
Preventing license plate renewals through vehicle registration holds; and
Taking legal action when necessary.
