Miami-Dade teacher accused of kissing and groping male student

An arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Monday details the allegations against a Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher who was detained last week.

According to the complaint, Leroy Wright Jr., 46, of Miami, was detained Friday on accusations of committing violations against students by authority people, engaging in illicit sexual intercourse with a minor, and depicting obscene content involving a youngster.

According to police, on April 28, the principal of Miami Jackson Senior High School received an email from someone informing her that Wright, a reading teacher at the school, was “having a relationship” with a student.

The principal eventually submitted a “personnel investigative model report” to the M-DCPS Office of Professional Standards last Thursday, which was subsequently sent to the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, according to the report.

According to the report, officers spoke with the person who emailed the principal on Thursday and identified the victim to them.

Police claimed they then interviewed the victim at his home, in front of his mother, and the kid informed them that he first encountered Wright at the start of the school year, when Wright approached him and invited him to join the Freshman Club, for which he was the adult sponsor.

Police stated the student joined the club.

According to the investigation, the victim stated that the first sexual event occurred on April 29 when he hugged his teacher as he exited Wright’s classroom.

According to police, the student said Wright hugged him back before kissing him for around 6 minutes while groping him.

Wright also kissed the student on May 1, grabbed him that day, and drove him home on May 4, according to authorities.

According to the report, Wright waived his Miranda rights and made some sort of admission, though his specific remark to investigators was omitted from the publicly published report.

Police said Wright was told prior to his arrest that the victim’s cellphone had been “forensically examined.”

He was put into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Friday and remains there Monday morning without bond.

His counsel appeared on his behalf during a court hearing on Monday. He is scheduled to appear before a court again on Wednesday.

Wright’s neighbor told Local 10 News that he was shocked to learn of the PhD-holder’s arrest.

“He’s too educated for that. “No, not my friend,” she replied.

The school district issued a statement over the weekend confirming Wright’s dismissal.

“The type of behavior this individual is accused of will not be tolerated, as it runs contrary to the professional conduct we expect from all employees,” the statement said. “The District has commenced employment termination proceedings and will prohibit the individual from pursuing future employment with the District. At M-DCPS, the safety and well-being of all students are our top priorities.”
