US marshals arrested 17-year-old suspected in mass shooting on Iowa City pedestrian mall

Federal police arrested a Georgia teenager on Monday after he allegedly opened fire near a prominent University of Iowa nightlife neighborhood last month, injuring five people.

According to a news release from Iowa City, US marshals apprehended Damarian M. Jones, 17, of Cedar Rapids, near Atlanta. He is facing many charges, including five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault. He was incarcerated in Georgia’s Clayton County Jail for an extradition hearing to Iowa.

The announcement did not say how the marshals tracked Jones down, where he was detained, or whether he resisted them. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney. Messages left with the US Marshals Office in Des Moines, the Iowa City Police Department, and Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmerman Smith’s office for more information were not immediately responded.

According to police, Jones was involved in a violent fight that broke out near the Iowa campus just before 2 a.m. on April 19. During a pause in the battle, he allegedly fired six bullets at the gathering before fleeing.

One victim was shot in the head, and the other in the arm and chest. Two other people were injured in at least one leg, while another was struck in the stomach. According to a news statement issued Monday, one victim is still in the hospital, but no one knows which one or what their condition is.
